Inside the interrogation room: Social judgment biases and influences

Lazenby Hall, Room 34, at 4:00 PM

Thursday, March 30, 2000

Based on laboratory research and experiences as a trial consultant and expert witness, Kassin will describe what transpires behind the closed doors of the police interrogation room--and with what effects. First, he'll talk about the social perception biases and influence techniques that characterize the way police determine if people are guilty and get them to confess. Next he'll describe the documented problem of false confessions--and why people would admit to crimes they did not commit. Finally, he'll talk about the impact that voluntary and coerced confessions have on the decision-making of juries.
