Stereotypes and social judgment:

A 'shifting standards' perspective

Lazenby Hall, Room 34, at 4:00 PM
Thursday, February 11, 1999

The talk will provide an overview of research demonstrating the role stereotypes play in activating category-specific judgment standards. The stereotype that women are less capable leaders than men, for example, prompts perceivers to judge a woman's leadership ability relative to (low) standards for women, and a man's leadership ability relative to (higher) standards for men. Implications for measuring stereotype-based judgment, for understanding decision rules for "diagnosing" the presence of stereotype-relevant traits, and for predicting behavioral responses will be discussed.
