Transportation into Narrative Worlds
Although stories are a pervasive element of human existence, the means by which they can change our attitudes has been relatively ignored, in favor of more explicit persuasive messages such as editorials and advertisements. The phenomenological experience of becoming absorbed into stories, or transported into narrative worlds, is a mechanism of narrative persuasion. The transportation experience includes mental imagery, emotional involvement, and cognitive engagement, which combine to influence real-world beliefs. This talk will discuss recent findings on the nature and effects of transportation into narrative worlds, with a focus on how the transportation experience may change across different media (text, film, interactive narrative).
