Honor, dignity, and face: Ideal types and experiments

Three ideal types of cultural/motivational systems will be sketched out.
The ideal types are a: culture of dignity, culture of honor, and culture
of face.  Individual differences occur within these differing cultural
contexts as individuals embrace or reject cultural ideals to various
degrees.  The consequences of this for the connections between dignity,
honor, face, violence, reciprocity, and trustworthiness are then
illustrated in empirical studies. The implications for studying
personality within culture will be discussed.
