Mind Reading: Using Simple Heuristics to Understand Complex Minds Understanding the contents of another's mind -- his or her thoughts, feelings, attitudes, or knowledge -- is central to nearly all social interaction. An accurate understanding of another's mind, however, can be hard to come by. In this talk I will suggest that mind reading operates like many other judgments under uncertainty, and is simplified by the use of readily accessible heuristics such as anchoring and adjustment, or stereotypes. Thinking of mind reading as a product of intuitive heuristics may not only help to explain the biases that often arise when people adopt another's perspective, but may also resolve theoretical disputes about the psychological processes underlying this basic component of social life. |
