The nature of prejudice: Understanding and addressing "implicit" bias

Racial prejudice is often not conscious or intentional; even well-intentioned Whites, who believe that they are nonprejudiced, can harbor unconscious (implicit) biases. This presentation examines the different, sometimes complementary and sometimes inconsistent, influences of explicit and implicit racial biases on Whites' interracial behaviors. The effects of this implicit bias on the intergroup relations and outcomes for Blacks are illustrated. Finally, the challenges of addressing and reducing implicit racial biases are considered.
